What are probiotics?

According to a publication from The National Center for Complimentary and  Integrative Health,  “Probiotics are live microorganisms that are intended to have health benefits.” So, Mommas- we know that probiotics are GOOD bacteria that help to facilitate healing and balance within the gut- where most of our bacteria resides. The article goes on to say, “…bacteria that are normally present in our intestines help digest food, destroy disease-causing microorganisms, and produce vitamins. Large numbers of microorganisms live on and in our bodies. In fact, microorganisms in the human body outnumber human cells by 10 to 1. Many of the microorganisms in probiotic products are the same as or similar to microorganisms that naturally live in our bodies.”(Resource 1)

BOTTOM LINE: Probiotics help our GUT health- where the majority of our immune system resides.

Why should I take them?

  • Improves digestion

  • Combats IBD and IBS (Inflammatory bowel disease + Irritable bowel syndrome)

  • Enhances immune system

Look for brands that have the right line of bacteria, are natural, and have a proven record. Also, understand this simple fact: Not all brand will be equal. I’ve linked some helpful articles below to help you decide with your doctor which brand may be best for you and your health:
